Oral Health Program
A healthy child includes one who has access to oral health services - this includes extended follow-up and treatment as stated in Performance Standard 1304.20 (c) in which education is integrated for optimal outcomes of the child’s oral health status. In addition, the guidance of Performance Standard 1305.34 (b) states that staff and parents are to be educated about the ways to prevent baby-bottle tooth decay and other early childhood cavities. Trainings are highly interactive and cover a large scope of oral health education based on nutritional practices, fluoride importance, proper oral discipline and practices, and techniques to better prepare the family for dentist visits.
Health Services Advisory Committee
Our Health Services Advisory Committee is comprised of SETA Head Start parents, professionals, staff, and other volunteers from the community. HSAC provides a broad range of professional expertise and help promote linkages to existing community resources.
SETA Head Start Therapeutic Preschool
A collaboration project between SETA Head Start, River Oak Center for Children, Sacramento County Division of Mental Health and Sacramento County ACCESS Team, two therapeutic preschool classes at two SETA Head Start center locations (Crossroad Gardens and Sharon Neese) are in current operation. Designed to meet the needs of special needs preschool children in a typical Head Start classroom, each therapeutic preschool class is staffed by SETA Head Start teachers and mental health clinicians. The program uses a social skills building curriculum called The Incredible Years Training that supplements the SETA Head Start academic curriculum

This project is in collaboration with the Health Education Council, Soil Born Farms, SETA Head Start, and Bill Maynard of the Sacramento Area Community Garden Coalition. With funding from the First 5 Sacramento, events and workshops such as gardening projects, community farm stands, and parent and teacher education on healthy eating and physical activity, are being implemented to enhance the health and nutrition curriculum at Head Start including the I Am Moving I Am Learning (IMIL) initiative.
DRDP-R Curriculum & Educational Tool Kits
The Desired Results Developmental Profile-revised (DRDP-R) serves as the assessment tool for all center based SETA Head Start programs. This single tool meets the requirements of State Title IV programs and Head Start Child Outcomes. Our DRDP-R Teacher Resource Binder provides an accumulation of forms and ideas gathered from the Sonoma State website, teachers, resource teachers, education specialists and coordinators throughout Sacramento County. A committee was formed to identify which resources would be most valuable to classroom teachers as they used the DRDP-R. Each Head Start program is encouraged to identify and incorporate the ideas and forms which best meet the needs of their specific program.
Countywide Training for Preschool, Full Inclusion of Staff
Within the Sacramento area, the Head Start program has a long standing collaboration with Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) Special Education Preschool program. Head Start and SCOE educators work together as a team in preschool classrooms to provide an inclusive educational environment that benefits all children. Ongoing training and technical assistance is provided to Head Start and SCOE staff on an as-needed basis; however, a countywide annual staff development day provides a training opportunity for both agencies to expand on best practices in supporting children with special needs. Trainers are well educated in the area of Early Childhood Education with an emphasis on Special Education and Early Intervention.
Pedestrian Safety
Head Start incorporates a Performance Standard that designates ongoing pedestrian safety education to our families. According to Performance Standard 1310.21, Safety Education (a):
“Each agency must provide training for parents and children in pedestrian safety and it must be developmentally appropriate and an integral part of program experiences. Furthermore, the need for an adult to accompany a preschool child while crossing the street must be emphasized in the training provided.”
Trainings are engaging and challenges parents to see from the child’s perspective while advising them on safety practices that are applicable in their lives. Other safety training in this area includes collaborating with the SafeKids of Greater Sacramento, who provide our parents with year round Car Seat Safety classes and fitting stations.
