The Impact of Head Start/Early Head Start in Sacramento County
Head Start Fact Sheet
- More than 70,000 Sacramento low-income preschool children and families have benefited from Head Start services since 1965.

- Sacramento County has 107 Head Start/Early Head Centers housing more than 239 classes, including one center service homeless children and families.

- 6,612 children enrolled in Head Start were medically screened--of those screened, thirty-four percent (34%) were identified as needing follow-up treatment of which 94% received treatment.

- Eleven percent (11%) of Head Start enrollment consisted of children with challenging abilities (speech and language impairments, health impairments, visual handicaps, hearing impairments, orthopedic handicaps, learning disabilities and mental retardation).
- Ninety-seven percent (97%) of the children enrolled more than 45 days completed or were up-to-date on their immunizations.

- Approximately ninety-one percent (91%) of enrolled families received social services through their involvement with Head Start.
- Approximately 1,317 mental health referrals, interventions and follow-ups were completed.
