Family Day in the Park/Head Start Awareness Day

The first Friday in October, Head Start centers from Sacramento County converge on William Land Park to enjoy a family day in the park. All of the child development sites offer activities for children, there are bounce houses, cultural entertainers, and lunch is served to all who attend. In addition, over 50 community agencies ranging from a dental van providing free dental checkups to children, agencies supplying free or reduced car seats, and other community agencies providing resources to families are available for all to access.

Career Incentive Program/GEDdiploma

Parents in the General Education Diploma (GED) program are reimbursed the cost of tuition and books to encourage Head Start parents who do not have a high school diploma to obtain a GED diploma. In addition, each Head Start site has GED books in English and Spanish for parents to check out if they need further assistance.

The Career Incentive Program provides funds for Head Start parents to continue their professional development toward the attainment of professional degrees or certificates at an accredited college, university or instructional institution.

Computer Trainingcomputer

Computer training in a variety of computer applications is provided for parents in a computer lab with 10 workstations. Staff is available to give assistance to parents as they work on self-directed programs. These include Microsoft Office 97, 2000 and XP modules and tutorial typing programs. Also we have some programs available in Spanish.  In addition to computer programs SETA also offers parents the opportunity to learn English or Spanish, using a self-directed, voice activated computer system. Parents receive a certificate upon completion of the Microsoft modules.

FLIP is one of the tools used to help parents increase their children's literacy skills. Monthly, each family receives a book to take home along with an activity sheet on things they can do at home with their child to enhance the reading experience. Families log how many hours a week they read to their children and this is turned into the site for special recognition by the staff. Books and activity sheets are available in 5 different languages.
